Manchester United players on loan 2015-16
Manchester United players on loan 2015-16
Remember Federico Macheda? whose late winner against Aston Villa helped Manchester United clinch the title in 2008-09 season. A series of six loan spells followed and the Italian was sold to Cardiff City during the start of the 2014-15 season. Now he plays for Nottingham Forest in the Championship after being loaned off by Cardiff City during the start of the season. So what does it take for a 17 year old who scored a winner on his debut for Manchester United seven years back to fall so deep in his career that he plays for a Championship side now. Six Loan Spells!! That was what all it took. Young players from the academy are usually sent out on loans and they decide their fortune.

With the loan terms having such a huge impact on one’s career, let’s have a look at the current players who were on loan this past 2015-16 season and how they fair to be a part of United’s first team for next season. Man Utd loan watch.

Adnan Januzaj (loaned to Borussia Dortmund)
After an impressive pre-season Januzaj started for quite a few matches against Newcastle, Aston Villa and even in the Champions League qualifiers against Club Brugge. On the last day of the summer transfer window he was loaned to Dortmund where he struggled to find a place in the starting eleven, he could only manage three starts for the German side. With his disastrous spell in Germany doing no good to him, United called him back in January. Played in the under 21s, struggled to prove his fitness, Januzaj was only preferred to the bench and was hardly used by Van Gaal from then.

Once regarded as the future of Manchester United is now becoming a forgotten man.

Chances next year: Would be decided by who is managing. If Van Gaal, he would again be loaned out, Mourinho comes in maybe we have to see, how would be approach the youth and academy, let’s see, most probably would be loaned again. And if Giggs takes over he would be given enough chances to prove his worth only if he could match up to the fitness levels.

Ashley Fletcher (loaned to Barnsley)
With 7 goals from 23 appearances for Barnsley, Fletcher is expecting first team spot at Manchester United next season. Rashford and he were of the same class and is determined to impress the staff at Old Trafford and is keen to find a place in United’s playing eleven. Fletcher already took over the limelight from Rashford when he scored in the England Under-20s where Rashford played just for 20 minutes coming off the bench.

Chances next year: With an impressive loan spell, Fletcher would challenge for a first team spot. Would probably be included in the 23 man squad next season.

Donald Love (loaned to Wigan Athletic)
Regarded as one of the finest products of the academy, joined Manchester United when he was eight and was in the eye of Sir Alex Ferguson throughout his development at the academy. Was loaned away to Wigan early in the season where he earned seven appearances, and was called back 2 months later. Made his Manchester United debut against Sunderland in February 2016 where United lost 2-1 away to Sunderland. Was also featured in the Europa League against FC Midtjylland which again was a 2-1 away loss to United. Usually plays as a central defender, forced to play a right back against Sunderland where he came on for the injured Matteo Darmian in the first half.

Chances next year: Difficult to break through to the first team with Smalling, Blind, Rojo, McNair and even Carrick playing at his position. Blackett and he could be used as reserve only if in case United don’t sign another defender this summer. With eyes set on Varane and others, Love would only be loaned out next season as well.

James Wilson (loaned to Brighton & Hove Albion)
With an impressive season in the Championship, James Wilson has transformed into a better player said Brighton manager Chris Hughton. Joined Brighton on loan in November, Wilson recorded a total of 5 goals from 24 appearances. With an impressive start to his Manchester United career under David Moyes, Wilson was not given enough chances under Van Gaal which eventually made way to Marcus Rashford. Wilson, with his growth at Brighton would try and make an impact in the pre-season.

Chances next year: Loaned out again if Van Gaal stays. Would be given chances if Giggs takes over as he had already been featured in all of the games Giggs managed after Moyes was sacked in the 2014-15 season.

Joe Rothwell (loaned to Barnsley)
With short spells at Blackpool and Barnsley, Joe Rothwell had a dull season throughout. He underwent a surgery to remove his tonsils and lost quite a bit of weight in that process. He needed to beef him up which he eventually did and was also in contention to feature on the bench for United’s game against Watford early March.

Chances next year: Central midfield that’s where he plays and would need to prove himself to get into that position at United. Next season he probably would be sold.

Nick Powell (loaned to Hull City)
Loaned to Hull City on the last day of the January transfer window, Nick Powell had a tough time with injuries at Hull and the only achievement during his spell was to feature in the FA Cup fifth round tie for Hull against Arsenal which ended 0-0.

Chances next year: With his contract running out this summer would probably be released by United next season and would be a free agent.

Tyler Blackett (loaned to Celtic)
His long passes in the 2014-15 season impressed all football lovers and was a Van Gaal favorite during the first part of the season. McNair and he had a very good 2014-15 season and both extended their contract as well the same year. With McNair favored to stay at United, Blackett was loaned to Celtic where we had a disastrous season and was unable to find a place in the starting eleven. This loan spell turned out to be a disaster for Blackett.

Chances next year: Would probably he loaned again next season.

Victor Valdes (loaned to Standard Liege)
The former Barcelona keeper is currently going through a dark patch in his career. He was recently in the news as he lost his cool and grabbed Anderlecht defender by his throat. After being exiled by Van Gaal for allegedly refusing to play for the club's Under-21 side, nothing has gone his way.

Chances next year: With already in talks with Espanyol, Valdes contract with Manchester United would come to an end this summer and would be released by United.

Other players on loan last season
Joel Castro Pereira (loaned to Rochdale)
Chances next year: Loaned out again.

Sam Johnstone (loaned to Preston North End)
Chances next year: Loaned out again.

Kieran O'Hara (loaned to Morecambe)

Van Gaal out! Van Gaal out! can soon be the new chants at Old Trafford following Man United's series of inconsistent performances under Louis Van Gaal. The red devils recorded their worst ever performance in the Premier League away to Bournemouth last Saturday as they lost 2-1 to the newly promoted Bournemouth side, after a dreadful away spell past week

Past week was only to forget for all the Man Utd fans as they saw their side out of the Champions League followed by a loss to Bournemouth in the league. Van Gaal despite being provided with the massive transfer funds was unable to maintain the balance and consistency of the squad. Van Gaal himself is not sure about his best starting eleven and according to the former players, United are moving backwards under Louis Van Gaal and are playing with fear.
Van Gaal Out
Van Gaal Out
Van Gaal, according to his philosophy believes in keeping the ball and creating chances. But there was no sense of attack when Man Utd play, some of their former players even came out and criticized the Van Gaal style and termed it as boring.

Van Gaal was also criticized for not utilizing Martial in a best possible way. Martial was an instant hit when he came to Old Trafford, easing past defenders, teasing them with his pace, everyone was so amazed with the qualities of the young Frenchman and were determined that United could be a massive force going ahead. And all of a sudden Martial was playing on the left and this caused issues up front. Martial despite being flexible playing in various positions should be playing on top ahead of Rooney.

Wilson another young prospect was never given a chance by Van Gaal and was sent out on loan without issues at the top not being met.

United are now in talks with Pep Guardiola as the possible replacement for Van Gaal and are also looking at Carlo Ancelotti if in case Bayern Munich hold on to their manager despite he being interested in managing Manchester United.

United now await for their draw in the Europa League along side Liverpool and Tottenham. Their possible opponents for the round of 32 could from a range of popular clubs including Marseille, Shakhtar Donetsk, Galatasaray, Sevilla, Valencia, FC Sion, Borussia Dortmund, FC Midtjylland, Saint-Etienne, Sporting Lisbon, Fiorentina, Anderlecht, Sparta Prague, FC Augsburg, Fenerbache and Villarreal.

Anthony Martial, the £36m youngster from Monaco has managed to live up to the expectations at Old Trafford and made himself a regular starter for the red devils ever since he has joined the club in September. With having scored five goals for his new club, the wonderkid is already being compared with the club legends like Cristiano Ronaldo in terms of number of matches taken to reach the five goal mark. The frenchman has taken only nine matches to achieve this fete whereas it took 39 matches for Ronaldo to achieve the same. Dubbed as the next Thierry Henry, Martial has maintained his composure on and off the field and never made the attention get on to his head and probably had the best start in the premier league of all the other major summer transfers this season.

With pace, power and creativity, United played him up front and cleared out on all the questions concerned to the striking options for the red devils. But ever since the International break, Martial has been playing on the left wing and this reduced the striking options for United. Though Martial had already played as a winger before, and made him totally comfortable in that role, the team needs him on the top and it is his best position. With Memphis available, Van Gaal should play Martial on the top and Rooney in the hole, behind the striker, unless there are any concerns with Memphis, who started the season on left. Having understood the poor run of form in the Euro Qualifiers for Netherlands, Memphis should pick himself up and it shouldn't take long with Van Gaal around and the long relationship the manager and player share.
United should play Martial on the top
United should play Martial on the top
With injuries only to Shaw and Young, United should put out their best lineup and always try to push for a win. The draw away to CSKA Moscow and the derby day draw at home to the rivals City should be seen as two chances of winning lost instead of settling for a point. It looks like Manchester United are playing for a draw instead of a win with such lineups, despite having many attacking options available.

One thing would be interesting to see where Martial plays when Young returns, Is the Memphis issue the real concern why Martial is playing on the left or is it something else. Whatever it may be, Martial should play in the number nine role, bursting out with pace, teasing defenders and finishing with composure.
